Before You Start

The Telegram mobile app does not support chat export. You need Telegram Desktop installed on your computer (Windows, macOS, or Linux).

  • Download Telegram Desktop from desktop.telegram.org if you do not already have it.
  • Log in with the same phone number as your Telegram account.
Telegram Desktop must be logged in and synced — your chat history is downloaded to the app on first use, which may take a few minutes for large accounts.

Exporting a Chat

Open Telegram Desktop and navigate to the chat or group you want to export.

Click the ⋮ (three-dot menu) in the top-right corner of the chat.

Select "Export chat history".

In the export settings dialog, enable the following media types:
  • Photos
  • Video files
  • Voice messages

Set the Format to "Machine-readable JSON". This is critical — the HTML format is not supported by XMOX.

Choose a date range if you only want part of the history, then click "Export". Telegram will download the messages and media into a folder on your computer.

Preparing the ZIP for Upload

When the export finishes, Telegram will show you the folder location. Open it — you will see a result.json file and subfolders for media.

Select the entire export folder and compress it into a ZIP file.
  • macOS: right-click the folder → Compress
  • Windows: right-click → Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder
  • Linux: zip -r export.zip ChatExport_*/

Uploading to XMOX

In your XMOX workspace, click + New Job and select "Telegram Export".

Upload the ZIP file. XMOX reads result.json automatically and locates media files by their relative paths inside the archive.

Wait for the job to reach Ready status. Voice and video messages are transcribed and inserted into the conversation timeline.

What XMOX Does with Your Export

  • Reads all text messages from result.json, preserving sender names, timestamps, and reply threads.
  • Transcribes voice messages (OGG/OPUS format) and video messages (MP4) into text.
  • Includes sticker and reaction context where relevant.
Note on group export limits: In some Telegram groups and channels, you can only export your own messages, not messages from other members. This is a Telegram platform restriction and applies regardless of your role in the group.
